  HISTORY OF THE SOLVANG CENTURY

Solvang Century BannerThe very first "Solvang Century" was held in 1983 to raise funds for a club debt. In 1982, the SCOR Cardiac Cyclists Club sent 14 riders on a non-stop relay ride from the Avenue of the Stars in Century City to the Avenue of Flags in New York City in 12 days, 1 hour and 50 minutes. While most of the expenses were paid for, the bottom line was that SCOR owed $2000.00. Up until 1983 the primary club fund-raisers had been paper and aluminum can drives! It was clear that it would take a lot of newspapers and cans to raise $2000.00!

Instead, SCOR decided to take a club ride and open it up to the public. That was 1983 and 300 riders participated. Now in its 30th (!) year, the Solvang Century, Metric & Half Century has evolved into one of the largest and most well known recreational rides in the USA with up to 5000 participants. Over 114,000 cyclists have ridden a cumlative total of almost 9 million miles over the last 29 years of this event.

Solvang RiderOver the years, SCOR has always striven to emphasize safety (we were one of the first rides to make helmets mandatory) as well as service. Our safety record continues to improve each year due to improving rider behavior and the presence of the California Highway Patrol and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department who are contracted to provide intersection control, course support and enforcement. Please ride SAFELY, stay out of pacelines if you're inexperienced and understand this event is NOT a race. Please be courteous of local townfolk and traffic...our ability to return each year is dependent on your behavior. The money we have raised goes to heart related projects, Camp Bon Couer, Camp Del Corazon on Catalina Island and Camp Taylor.

Click on each Camp link to donate directly to the congenital heart disease camp(s) of your choice. Service provided by Active.com Giving program.

We welcome your comments and suggestions as we strive to create an event that meets the needs of all recreational cyclists in this beautiful rural area.

  ABOUT SCOR

SCOR is an incorporated non-profit recreational bicycling club. The club was started in 1974 by Randy Ice, P. T., C.C.S. to encourage bicycling as rehabilitative therapy after heart surgery, angioplasty and other forms of heart disease. Currently headquartered in Whittier, California, SCOR stands for Specialized Coronary Outpatient Rehabilitation. Approximately 50% of our members are men and women with heart disease. SCOR members promote safe cycling and emphasize the health benefits of cycling and related activities. SCOR members sponsor or work as volunteers for the Solvang Century, Metric Century & Half Century, Camp Bon Couer, Camp Taylor and Camp Del Corizon (2 day camps for children with congenital heart disease) and numerous other cycling activities.
